Made in Greenwich: Shop Window Murals and Chalkboard
Nitty Gritty: Chalkboard and seasonal window art for a local handmade product shop. Windows measuring approximately 2.2m x 2.2 m.
The Brief:
· Create window art to catch the eye of people walking and driving by
· A traditional style to compliment the traditional look of the shop front
· The design should allow people to see the display of handmade items inside the window.
· The chalkboard will stand inside the entrance hall to direct people into the shop.
· Create a Christmas window that can be refreshed to reflect seasonal changes.
· The design should be built around existing lettering showing the shop’s website address.

My Creative Solution:
After sharing sketches for a range of ideas with the shop’s curator, she selected a design featuring lettering on scrolls and wintery botanicals such as poinsettia, mistletoe and holly, with a space in the centre to view the handmade products. We chose wording for the scrolls to celebrate the makers, and communicate what was special about their handmade products. The design was updated with spring flowers for Valentine’s Day and spring, a crown for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and drawings of local landmarks to attract summer tourists. The ‘welcome’ chalkboard used a blend of traditional lettering styles.

Centre left to right: colouring the spring flowers; welcome sign above the shop door; Made in Greenwich spring window. Bottom left to right: Jubilee window, mock up of the summer window featuring local landmarks; Welcome chalkboard in the new Made in Greenwich shop at GCDA’s Greenwich Hub.
The Result:
Eye-catching window art with lettering communicating the unique nature of the shop, and the flexibility to update the design with seasonal changes. As well as a beautiful chalkboard, still welcoming visitors three years later at Made in Greenwich’s new venue at GCDA’s Greenwich Hub
Client Testimonial:
“The results were impressive, with a design that reflected our Greenwich location and included modern graphics as well as flora and fauna. The response to the window was incredibly positive, and I know it brought great joy to people... As the seasons changed, Ellen altered the window to reflect the different colours of spring and then summer. ”
